This falls short. If Putin is anointed as President for life, who knows what to expect? It is not just dust being kicked up before ordinary presidential elections. Putin doing the Castro thing - that is worrisome. "Yes, Russia is under threat. No, it is not constitutional to take this job until the point when my health and age no longer permit me to continue. I don't even want to. But if the motherland insists, well - noblesse obige. What choice do I have? If Russia must be saved and I am the man - who am I to argue? I'll do it out of a sense of duty."
