Annals of Russian Barbarism

The Guardian reports:

The son of Russia's deputy prime minister was sentenced to 14 months in a British jail for beating a banker during a drunken brawl. Petr Zhukov, who works in London as an investment banker, repeatedly struck another banker at a party in an East London apartment, leaving him unconscious and bleeding heavily last July 7, Judge Nicholas Loraine-Smith said. The 24-year-old son of Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov was convicted of unlawful wounding after he joined a melee between his friends and the other banker. Zhukov's friend, Artjom Dahko, a Latvian bank analyst started the fight because the victim was wearing shoes in the apartment - which he said was an insult in his culture. The judge said Zhukov tried to stop the attack at first. "But you, too, very quickly lost your temper and turned ... to aggressor,'' Loraine-Smith said during a hearing at Southwark Crown Court. The victim eventually regained consciousness and staggered out into the street. He needed five stitches in his cheek and 20 to his lower lip. He suffered a crushed cheekbone, two cracked ribs, a swollen jaw, cuts on the back of his head and bruises to his arms, shoulder, chest and legs. Zhukov was cautioned three weeks before the incident for a drunken attack on a taxi driver - a factor Loraine-Smith said he considered in passing sentence. In an earlier plea for leniency, Zhukov's lawyer, Clare Montgomery, said her client was "deeply mortified'' by the injuries he helped cause. She said he was also deeply upset at the damage that the "horrendous publicity'' about his case in Russia caused his family. Zhukov's friend, Dahko, 27, was sentenced to 12 months on the same charges.

Mind you, he's not sorry he caused these barbaric injuries, he's just embarrassed to have been caught and exposed.

This is Hector,

I know I'm going to hate myself for asking this. But what the hell does a drunked brawl in a London apartment have to do with Russian people or politics? Are you implying that only Russians get into brutal drunken brawls? You people really should get out more.

Tree guys got drunk and had a fight.
Is it a real case to demonstrate russophobia?
Same coold happen to a three Harley guys in any town in California or Idaho, and even, which is more likely, to a three African-American guys.

We are not implying anything. We're simply pointing out that the son of a high-ranking Russian official is a thug and a criminal.

But thanks for reminding everyone that Russia is a nation awash in drunken criminals, many of whom are lionized and made into heroes. We'd forgot to mention that!

Frankly, the fact that you choose to rationalize such behavior is disgusting and grievously harmful to Russia. Why do you hate Russia so much? Do you really believe we can't expect civilized behavior from Russians, so we should overlook it? That's sad.

Not much to comment about the fact itself. Certain kinds of people should really get some help to prevent further antisocial behaviour.

Nonetheless, why this case should be tagged as "Russian barbarism"? Does it demonstrate Russian barbarism?

"In an earlier plea for leniency, Zhukov's lawyer, Clare Montgomery, said her client was "deeply mortified'' by the injuries he helped cause."

You wrote this! So what's that comment of yours at the end of the article?

"But thanks for reminding everyone that Russia is a nation awash in drunken criminals, many of whom are lionized and made into heroes. We'd forgot to mention that!"

Who reminded you of this?

i like the irony that the children of russia's elite almost ALL study and work abroad. so the propoganda-whores on russian tv will vilify the brits but guess where the elite's children live?? russia's a dump, a skid row, and a first priority of russia's elite is to get their children westernized.

We do not know how the conflict developed and who said what. Could be the victim himself provoked the fight, saying something about the defendant's girlfriend, wife or mother. Sometimes a real man has to fight. Broken cheekbone? Not a big deal! Arcus zigomaticus is too thin and therefore fragile. And all the guys were in the same rank-bankers. Well, when we have three princes they may fight too. Or three actors-why not if there is such a need?
Kim Zigfeld does not know not only what Russianness is. She does not know what a real man is. She might be a lesbian or a spinstar. She has one bad habit: to jump into conclusions. Let her do, she will declare all the Americans to be adulterers and even lechers based the on Clinton-Levinsky scandal.

^ lol, you got a point, I hadn't noticed that before. They all do go to Western countries for education. Hilarious, I thought Russia was suppose to be the leader of civilized culture... ; )
