Russia in a nutshell

"Russia is one of those places where you have to be a little bit sensible. I'm not going to go round town draped in an England flag. People realize that this is a country you want to avoid being arrested in."

-- Mark Perryman, a spokesman for an England fans' group

Russia: It even terrifies English football hooligans.

That pretty much says it all.

Россия!

What a game. What a country. Makes you proud to be living here. Kind of like Lake Placid in 1980.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Gordan Browne (or are supposed to call him Brownie now).

TOM:

Why are you trying to change the subject? Does the actual subject scare you that much?

All Russia did in this match was to avoid elimination after a series of pathetic losses. You may recall that Russia didn't even qualify for FIFA this year, even lowly America managed that.

You didn't attend Anna Politkovskaya's memorial service, did you? It shows.

I dont think he is old enough to remember that in chess, the russians played to stalemate since they couldnt win. thats their strategy and its one of attrition. Kasperov screamed because he knew that unless they tried to win, he couldnt beat them given the turns limit. They only had to hang on for 28(25?) turns.

As for ANna, i didnt either, and i hope it doesnt show. I could spend the rest of my life attending funerals of those who were worth attending. I guess thats in itself is a statement.
