Russians Can't See the ROM for the Bytes
A nice simple point made simply by the Ruminations on Russia computer blog: Russians can win international computer competitions by writing wonderful computer code, often very fast. What they can't do is create meaningful businesses that produce software that the rest of the world buys. There isn't a Russian Google or Microsoft or Lara Croft. But there are a bunch of trophies on mantlepieces (that is, if Russians had mantlepieces, there would be). And so it goes in Russia.
